Voodoo Dolls
The term “Voodoo Doll” actually refers to a magick charm created to represent a person. The dolls are more accurately called “Wangas” and can be used in certain “Voodoo” rituals. In reality, these dolls are rarely used by pure Voodooists who follow the original west African rituals of the religion. They are more commonly used in rituals associated with particular “offshoots” of Voodoo, such as the Hoodoo religion, practiced in southern Louisiana and some parts of the Caribbean.

Contrary to popular belief, when dolls are used in rituals, it is usually in pursuit of a positive objective, like Love, Success or Protection. Rituals involving Wangas are commonly performed at midnight. Certain steps, like anointing the doll with a particular oil specific for the ritual, are performed to “prepare” the doll. In addition to oils, other liquids are sometimes administered such as saliva (which is sometimes used in love rituals) or honey (used in certain spells to “sweeten” someone up). Personal items, like jewelry, pictures and hair are used to help associate the doll with an actual person. Often incense and candles are used in the main ritual which involves extreme concentration, meditation and prayer. Once the ritual has been performed, the doll is then buried or burned.
