Candles have been used for thousands of years in rituals of every religious tradition around the world. The main reason that candles remain extremely popular, for secular use and religious ceremonies even in the day of electricity and central heating, is the powerful effect that the candle’s flame provides. The element of Fire is very powerful in its ability to help one’s focus, enhance concentration and achieve a reflective, meditative state.
Also, many believe that, like sound vibrations, colors emit “vibrations” that can be used to bring about extensive changes in one’s mood, environment and life situation. This makes the color of the candle’s wax also very important when choosing a candle. The following chart shows what colors are traditionally used to achieve a particular purpose. Before being burned, candles are commonly anointed with oils that are appropriate to the desire trying to be achieved. To add the scent and texture provided by oil is thought to help “charge” your candle. For instance, someone looking for love and passion will commonly coat a red candle with “Love Drawing” oil or Patchouli oil. These oils are appropriately scented and/or derived from herbs that have been traditionally used for certain goals. (See Magickal Oils)
Some candles are also molded into certain shapes to coincide with the purpose in which they are being burned.
Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to burn the candle all at one time. However, it is tradition to “snuff” the candle (as opposed to blowing it out) and to continue the ritual the following day around the same time as you originally started it.
Remember… when burning candles, please use common sense. Never leave a candle unattended. Believe in the Magick.
