This tradition of invoking St. Joseph, the patron saint of workers and family, to help with real estate needs, most likely originates back to Europe when an order of nuns buried coins containing the image of St. Joseph to bring luck in acquiring a piece of property needed for their convent. This same practice was first used in North America in by a religious brother in Canada. Some people also believe that German carpenters may have contributed to this tradition, burying St. Joseph coins in houses they built.
